Initial thoughts on "The painted photographs of François-Marie Banier"
When I first saw these images I thought they were very interesting because the writing on them related to what is in the picture. I like that the writing gives the images more of a meaning. The writing takes a plain, boring, mundane picture to something that is very interesting.

MY IDEA.
My first idea for this project is to print some of the images above and to get people to write anything that comes to their mind on it. I'm interested in seeing what different peoples approaches are to my images. For example, I want to see if people write things that relate to the image in some way or if they just write anything that pops into their minds.
I'm going to print the images a couple of times. For the first set of image, I am going to give the images to people without any context and see what they write. Then I am going to give my second set of images to different people with some context. This way I can compare what is written and see how much the writing differs. I can also see if the ones with context have more written on them that is linked to the image in contrast to the ones without.

François-Marie Banier.
Banier is a french novelist, playwright, artist, actor and photographer. I was drawn to his work called 'The Painted Photographs of François-Marie Banier'. These particular images caught my eye because although they are in black and white, the contrasting colour writing makes the images pop. However, as the writing is in a different language I'm not sure if the writing relates to the images but I would imagine that they would.
My favourite image of them all is the 7th image (the image in the cafe). The reason I like this particular photo is becuase the word 'cafe' looks as though it has been written on the cup instead of just the image. I also like how that relates to the image itself.

Barbara Kruger.
- She is best known of her silkscreen prints.
- As Kruger's career has progressed, her work has expanded to include site-specific instillations, videos and audio works. She has also maintained a firm basis in social, cultural and political critique.
- Kruger is associated with postmodern feminist art and conceptual art. In her work, she presents pro-feminist and anti-facist ideas to the public.
- She combines tactics like appropriation with her characteristic wit and direct commentary to communicate with the viewer and encourage the interrogation pf contemporary circumstances.
- Kruger first trained in advertising before she became an artist. Her work is very similar to subvertising as the messages on her pictures usually contradict the message that the image is giving.
Lorna Simpson
- Simpson is an African-American multimedia artist.
- She made her name in the 80s and 90s with works like 'Guarded Conditions' and 'Square Deal'.
- Simpson's works have been included in exhibitions nationally and internationally as well.
- She is very well known for her photo-text instillations, her photo collages and her films.
- Her works are linked with feminist art and identity politics.
- Simpson uses multimedia art to explore identity -which is who we are- using her own experiences as a black woman to inspire and influences others.
For this project, I decided to experiment more with different ways of writing messages on my images. Instead of writing on them ,I decided to sew them onto the image. To get the writing, I chose a random book, picked a random page and them chose a number between 1 and 50 and then chose a phrase from that line to sew onto my image. This way, the writing doesn't correlate to the image in any way.
MY PLAN/S FOR THE EXAM.
1.I have chosen to write song lyrics/song titles as the 'messages' on my images. The way I chose the song is by putting my playlist on shuffle and either writing the title of the first song, or writing a line from the song that really sticks out to me. During the exam, I am going to print the pictures of my work and have a play around with different arrangements of the images. I'm going to place the images in different ways and re photograph them, and keep repeating until I have a placement that I like.
2.The second idea I have is to document my relationship with the skinhead subculture. I plan to take images that relate to me and how I am involved in the skinhead subculture, for example my hair cut (a feather cut), the clothes I wear, the music I listen to, other skinheads I know etc.
3.My last idea is to combine ideas 1 & 2 together. For this idea I will put song lyrics from my favourite reggae/two tone/ska/rocksteady songs and put them onto the images. Some of the lyrics may relate to the images, some might not.
